The Mixtape of Love
An interactive playlist generator that creates a mixtape to share with a loved one.
Dedicated to everyone who spent hours in their bedroom with a two-deck cassette tape player pressing ‘record’ and ‘stop’ and agonising over the music choices. For all the hours spent neatly completing the cover card with a list of tracks. And, for everyone who risked their heart by sending the object of their affections the music tape, in the hope that they would fall madly in love with us. Timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day.
The Mixtape of Love uses a series of questions to guide a user through the process of creating an intimate musical playlist for someone special.
The Mixtape works by using the Spotify API to create a Spotify playlist; the function also integrates a database to find the song that was number one on a given birthday.
Once all songs have been selected, the complete list has a drag and drop facility to create the perfect play order. The playlist is then shared on the recipient’s Facebook timeline, taking advantage of social sharing.
To support the piece and offer a ‘story’ to journalists, we conducted a unique survey to find the Nation’s favourite love song. (The answer, by-the-way, is Aerosmith, Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.)
A few of the more random suggestions were Bat Out of Hell, Meat Loaf (it’s a one night stand); White Wedding, Billy Idol (Hey little sister, shotgun?); Firestarter by The Prodigy (I’m a firestarter, twisted firestarter) and several suggestions for Gloria Gaynor, I Will Survive. The all time classic ‘break-up’ song. The top prize for the oddest love song vote was Gangnam Style by PSY.
